Many potential car buyers in Pakistan prefer to spend their hard earned cash on cars imported from Japan. The Japanese take better care of their cars than the locals do, and the climate in Japan is not as harsh on vehicles as the climate of the subcontinent. In many cases it is wise to buy cars manu
factured in other parts of Asia, as you can assume the quality is higher than locally manufactured models.

That said, there are some major drawbacks you should know if considering buying a Toyota Vitz or Platz in Pakistan.

Low Clearance

These cars were made for city driving in Japan, not in Pakistan. Speed bump engineers have some learning to do, as many speed bumps are too high or made it such a way that they can damage your car. These two models have lower clearance than most other vehicles on Pakistan's roads. As a result, they take the worst beating from speedbumps, potholes, and generally bad road conditions. It is also extremely dangerous to drive these vehicles in the rainy season (July to September), as the low clearance makes flooding and electrical damage more likely. You will also have trouble on some of the steeper driveways in big cities.

Driving these cars off the beaten path is certainly not advisable. Perhaps the stupidest decision I have made in my entire life was to drive a Toyota Vitz up the Karakoram Highway to Karimabad. It took three days driving during daylight hours, and the car did not fare well in landslide zones. Suzuki Mehrans and Corollas may be able to zip and bump along on mountain roads, a Vitz or a Platz can not.

Not Compatible with CNG

Local mechanics will not fit these cars for use with Certified Natural Gas (CNG). That means you'll always have to drive on petrol which currently costs ten times as much as CNG. This makes these mid-range cars very expensive to run for your average use. Most more expensive city cars, including the Honda City, are compatible with CNG kits.

Poor Fuel Quality = Pollution Machine

  • See how low clearance and city speed bumps don't mix
  • Learn why you'll pay ten times as much at the pump
  • Get the heads up on spare parts and insurance

We now go to the Toyota Dealer and use their mechanics. It costs more, but we feel more confident about their work and we know we're getting genuine parts. I'm guessing there's not a Toyota dealer in RYK...

Since writing the article I have heard that it's easier to convert a manual Vitz to CNG than an automatic Vitz (which is what we have). We have had our catalytic converter removed and are now officially polluting the environment much more, but the car is running better. The check engine light stays on now that the cat. conv. is off though. I think if we had not driven our Vitz almost to China and back on the KKH I would not be so concerned with the low clearance issue. Vitz is very popular nowadays, which is good cause we need someone to buy ours in June! : )

Good comments from Farooq. I'd like to find a mechanic who would convert it to CNG, as the ones I've asked haven't been willing to do it. We have bigger tires, but since the car was made for smaller tires they do cause some squeaking while turning as they don't fit as well. One of my friends got her Platz raised up to try to help with the low clearance. I think if we lived in Japan where roads were smooth, speedbumps made properly, locally available parts, and less chance of theft we'd really like the car.

i disagree to some extent wht has been said. i have been using vitz for last one and a half year. and i find it a really nice car. for road clearance you can use a little bigger tyre which will not damage the ride or the comfort level or the fuel consumption. as far as the CNG conversion is concerned I got it converted to CNG and I am happy to make that decision. Its wonderful. Although i heard rumours from people vitz is not compatible with CNG kits but i found otherwise. depends on the mechanic.
