Adults need a good night's sleep as much as children do, yet we continually neglect our sleep. In this day and age, insomnia is an increasing problem across the world for adults. As our stress level
s increase, we need to increase our ability to deal with it. Getting a good night's sleep will help us battle our daily stresses.
This might sound like a catch-22. In order to battle our daily stresses we need a good night's sleep, yet in order to get a good night's sleep, we need to relieve ourselves of the stress. Don't despair just yet! There are things we can do to help us get a good night's sleep and help us feel better during the day.
Here are some tips for getting that good night's sleep, and battling insomnia:
1. Create a nighttime routine. Parents know the importance of doing this for children, but as adults we can also benefit from having a nighttime routine. This helps tell our bodies and mind that it is time to relax for the night. Once the routine becomes a habit, our bodies and minds will expect sleep and be ready for it. Shower, brush teeth, lay out tomorrow's clothes are all examples of what one might do during a nighttime routine.
2. Lay off the caffeine after 4:00pm. This is extremely difficult for many, but very important. Caffeine stays in the system for up to 8 hours, so the earlier you can stop the caffeine, the better. Many people have admitted to having a bad caffeine habit, so this is a good way to start to cut back. Not only will this help with sleep patterns, but with overall health as well.
3. Use scented candles or oil burners in your bedroom. Do not use fruity scents, which will have a tendency to give you more energy. Try using floral scents, such as rose, lavender or gardenia in an effort to relax the mind and body.
4. Turn off the television. Another habit of people in today's society, the television might help some fall asleep, but studies have shown that it is a restless and less production sleep. Quality of sleep is just as important as quantity, so it is time to learn to sleep without the television.
