Chart Polski (Polish Greyhound 1) for centuries known as shorthaired sighthound breed, native dog of Poland during peaceful and turbulent times. 2 According to Russian author Sabaniejew the Chart Pols
ki breed result of interbreeding between Greyhound and Borzo (Russian Wolfhound a domestic dog. 6). 5 Dating back to the 12th century the Polish Greyhound hunted falcons as popular sport among the nobles of the country. 2 In 1600 Gostomski first described Chart Poliski in his writing and during the 1800's the breed was drawn in numerous paintings by Juliusz Kossak, Jozefa Brandta, and Alfreda Wierusz-Kowalskiego, and sketches by Siemienski and Norblina. 3 The Chart Polski became nearly extinct during the late 19th century as political and economic events unfolded that dwindled the number of landowners, subsequently less Polish Greyhounds where needed for hunting, and events of World War One and Two further reduced the breed number of dogs. 2 Fortunately peasants during World One and Two took in the Polish Greyhounds as hunting dogs since they were prohibited from owning firearms. In 1974 Doctors Malgorzzata and Izabella Szmurlo established Celerriums Kennel which breed and revived the number of Polish Greyhounds, besides the help of other kennels. "On February 23, 1986, the Zwiazek Kynologiczny w Polsce (national kennel Club of Poland) nationally recognized the breed. 4 On May 20, 1991 first time in America Chart Polski litter was born in Elizbieta Kennels (Maryland). 3
