IntroductionDr. Mesa of Cuba has reported many positive findings in schizophrenia including the deposit of glycoprotein granules around the vessels in the amygdala. Optic microscopy was used as well as electron microscopy.
Advocacy
"They say, 'Nothing can be done here!' I reply, 'I know no such word in the vocabulary I adopt.'" Dorothea Dix (1848)
"Raise up the fallen; succor the desolate; restore the outcast; defend the helpless." Dix
Dix was an advocate for psychiatric hospitals. She was from Massachusetts.
Diabetes of the Brain
Dr. Janice Stevens of the US has done PET studies on brain glucose metabolism. She found this metabolism to be low in both schizophrenia and depression, particularly in the frontal areas. This is a very important piece of the puzzle. It fits in with my theory of the brain burning amino acids instead of glucose. This also happens in hypoglycemia and in starvation.
