John McCain has formally asked Barack Obama to delay Friday's debate. McCain has also said that he wants to put a halt to campaigning and work on fixing the economy, according to the Associated Press and other media outlets. This comes after a private meeting between the two presidential candidates to figure out how to help our rapidly failing economy. Reports say the Obama initiated the talks about the economy. It was John McCain that pulled the first political punch by asking for an end to campaigning until they figure out a way to solve the economic crisis.
As a registered voter, I applaud this act by McCain. Many may see it as his trying to get political favor for addressing the economy, that he is playing the part of the caring candidate to garner votes. I do not see it this way.
I agree with McCain that the time to do something about this economic crisis is now. Both candidates are spending millions on their campaigning and debates that are scheduled. A better use of their time and money is to find a way to heal the economic problems that America is facing. No longer can the country go along with a band aid on as the candidates campaign for the presidency. We need action and we need it now. I am happy and surprised by this announcement by John McCain.
This does sound like something that Obama would have favored. I was in support of Obama with his ideas to help the economy. My hope is that he will jump on board with McCain's idea. It is time that they both put aside their differences and work to solve our economic crisis.
Obama would be wise to go with the halt to campaigning, but he may choose to fight it because it was McCain's idea. This would be terrible if he did and would permanently swing my vote for McCain. McCain will be heading back to Washington this week to find a solution. For our country's sake, I hope Obama joins him. Now is the time for action and not political debate as McCain stated.

Suspending the campaign is not going to solve our economic problem.
The fate of our economy doesn't depend on whether or not two senators are present for the next few days. However, the fate of the country for the next four years, including the continued strength or failure of the economy, depends a lot what people decide after this first debate. McCain knows how important the debates are, and he knows he won't make a strong showing.
Listen: McCain's most recent request on this issue is to have just HIS portion of the debate postponed (how can you have a debate with one person?) to...the date when the vice presidential debate is supposed to happen! He's clearly stalling, trying to cheat the American voters out of one of the most crucial parts of the electoral process. He's also trying to make certain that Sarah Palin never opens her mouth except to read words off a teleprompter.

Wow, is this man so old that he needs a break from making false and/or idiotic claims? How can he possibly be our President if he's this easily winded. Scary stuff
Ann, Lauren and Elizabeth- the debate will be meaningless if our economy fails. Both of these men are not merely campaigning for the White House, they are already elected public officials whose jobs it is to craft a solution to the economic problems facing the country. What better test is there of their promises of what they could do if elected than to see what they will do right now? The economic disaster looming for this country in the world is a cry to abandon partisan politics and work together for the common good.
I'm am thrilled that Obama has refused to delay the debate (just announced on NBC). If McCain can't concentrate on two issues at the same time, he has absolutely no business in the White House.
PS - interesting to see McCain changing his tune on the economy. He's been saying all along that there's nothing wrong with it.
Right. Like McCain can just take a few days off and fix the economy like its a leaky sink. This is such an obvious political ploy.
