Presidential Candidate John McCain Has Said He is Suspending His Campaign to Focus on America's Financial Problems

Early this afternoon, Republican Senator and presidential nominee John McCain said he will be halting his campaign for now in an effort to focus on the huge financial crisis that is taking place i

n the country, according to CNN and other outlets. He has taken another step, approaching opponent Democratic Senator Barack Obama to do the same and to delay Friday's night's presidential debate "until we have taken action to address this crisis," he told reporters.

He said he is confident that by "setting politics aside" that "before the markets open on Monday, we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people."

McCain's announcement came on the same day he was scheduled to make an appearance on the David Letterman show and seems almost like it could be viewed as a way to step back from the spotlight and refocus his own campaign and its promises.

With a major debate in this campaign set to take place on Friday, hosted at the University of Mississippi, it looked like this could be something that sways the undecided votes in the country one direction or the other. It is a little suspect that McCain waited until now to make this announcement, and with so many things going badly in the United States economy, it really seems like he is trying to gain votes by acting pro-active after the fact.

It also seems like it is a little under-handed to make an announcement like this without the other candidate standing right beside him on the stage.

It has been said that McCain has contacted the Obama camp about becoming involved in every aspect of his suggestions, and in his press conference today, McCain called upon Obama to act with him in this regard.

One thing he didn't mention, thought, was that Obama contacted him this morning, and approached him first about coming up with a joint statement, according to CNN.

CJ The houses thing is a major joke because McCain said he didn't even know how many houses his wife Cindy owns (and he calls Obama an elitist celebrity-type). McCain's entire campaign is a joke. I loved when Obama said that McCain is the only person still clinging to this war because even the Iraqi leaders and George W. have said it's time to put a time frame on this thing. For those who don't know, Obama plans to give tax cuts to 95% of the working population and only raise taxes for the richy rich. McCain wants to give tax breaks to the rich, but not to your average American. Hope this info helps. :)

Everybody is reporting on the seeming duplicity of the McCain campaign. But no one is reporting on the fact that McCain does not know how to use a phone and make conference calls. For him to say his presence is needed in Washington is probably the biggest joke of this campaign. The one candidate who has admitted publicly how much he does not know about the economy is needed in Washington to work on an economic bailout. Oh, yeah, let me vote for this guy. Forget that. Let me vote for him twice !!

I'm impressed at how fast you got this one and the Obama article up! Good job!

CJ I don't have an issue with him owning houses. Were you referring to something you saw in the news?

Great report but I cannot understand why difference it makes that he owns houses - this country is built on the ability for everyone to seek their fortune and fame. So why is everyone angry that McCain can own more than one house. What a man owns has nothing to do with his politics. Good lord can't you find something more important to bitch about.

Thanks for the heads up so I can continue to find out more about this new development.

Typical McCain machinations. I wonder which of his seven houses he was in when he made this announcement.

You took the words right out of my mouth! I believe that he is trying to play to the public. But what's strange, I heard today that his vote is crucial tot he new economic package that the senate is working on. If he votes one way, then the republicans have to vote the same way or it will look like there is no party unity! Great job on getting this out asap!
