As our lives move along at a faster and faster pace, many of us have found that we do not read as much as we used to. It's almost a luxury these days to take time from our hectic lives and enjoy a good book. I know I often have a row of books on my shelf just waiting for me to have the time to read them. I seem to find interesting books at a faster pace than I find time to sit-down and read.

Audiobooks came to be because you could simply pop one into your stereo system "read" a good book, while at the same time doing other things that life required of you like commuting to work. Audiobooks also allowed the blind, dyslexic, and people with other physical or mental challenges to enjoy a good book that they may not otherwise be able to read for themselves.

A close relative of mine requires kidney dialysis to stay alive. This treatment is three times per week for a minimum of four hours each session. For those twelve hours each week he is basically bedridden without much movement of one arm. Doing simple things like a craft project or even reading a book can be impossible with the use of only one hand. A simple solution to help my friend pass the time was an MP3 player and being able to easily download audiobooks from the internet to it. This allows him to be able to listen to his favorite author's books.

Reading fosters imagination. While you read your imagination forms pictures of the characters in your book. You are able to form your own movie in your head, if you will, while reading the words on the page. This is good for your brain and is also enjoyable entertainment.

An audiobook allows you to hear a book as it is being read to you. This uses a different part of your brain to translate the words into those pictures and movie in your head. The end result is a bit of a different experience, but one that is also good for your brain and still very enjoyable entertainment.

Reading in any form is very important to our lives and well being. Audiobooks allow us to "read" even when we are physically or mentally unable to for some reason. With the invention of the iPod and MP3 players we now have another great option and fewer excuses for not reading more.
