Most of us are familiar with investigative television programs such as 60 minutes, "Nightline" on the ABC network and "Dateline" on NBC. I came across some startling news while watching an interview with a notorious drug dealer on television. Crystal Meth has become a very popular club drug. I was under the impression that the drug dealer had been selling crystal meth to teenagers. After all, it is an unfortunate reality that many American teenagers experiment with drugs. To my surprise, the drug dealer revealed that his clients included corporate workers and doctors. I was outraged after hearing that doctors were one of his top customers. It is a reality that doctors and nurses smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol. Yet, they advise us as patients that we should not do so because it is an unhealthy habit.

To hear that doctors are using drugs such as crystal meth should be a cause for concern among the American public. According to the National Drug Intelligence Center, individuals who use crystal methamphetamine may have episodes of violent behavior, paranoia, confusion and insomnia. Imagine having a physician who is addicted to crystal meth. The use of illegal drugs can have negative effects on an individual's judgment and concentration. I am pretty sure that no American citizen wants to be treated by a doctor who uses drugs such as crystal meth. It is horrendous to know that doctors are using illegal drugs. The fact that we are unable to tell which doctors are using them is even more disturbing. It is a terrible fact that the doctors who use illegal drugs are able to do so because physicians are not being monitored by hospital administrators and health officials.

I find it hard to believe that professionals would disclose their true occupations to a drug dealer, much less their real names. People on crystal meth have obvious abnormal behaviors in my experience with patients. I am not sure I trust the testimony of a drug dealer very much. Drug addiction involves all types of people, including people in the health field.I hope most medical facilities have contracts that allow random drug testing. Mine does.

No, you would be surprised, but many stereotyped drug dealers are not what people think. There are those, yes, who sell to kids, but here in my neck of the woods, anyway, when someone higher up hears of someone selling to kids, they cut them off (stop selling to them). Before my rehabilitation via the State of Alabama, we cut off anyone we heard running any drugs we sold to anyone under 23. Even though 21 and 22 year olds are not minors, the hazardous effects of Methamphetamine cannot be comprehended at certain ages. I think anyone under 30 should not be sold to, personally, but we sold in order to maintain our own addictions, so we chose the lesser of two evils. And everyday that I am farther away from having to make those decisions is so much better:) One reason meth use is so rampant now is because we have put stricter guidelines on our borders. We cannot make cocaine and heroine here. It's harder to get it to America, as well, so that leaves pot and meth. I said it years ago wh

Face it drug addicts are not the stereotypes TV and movies portray. They are you neighbors, co-workers and providers. Healthcare workers are expected to work long hours as it is without sleep. But the body is not made to stay up for 36 hours or more--making doctors have to have something to keep them up. Which then puts us all at risk. Drug testing will not change a thing -- if it did we would have LESS drug usage in mainstream America instead of more. Employers have been drug testing regularly for 20 years or more and yet the epidemic has sky-rocketed. The "war on drugs" has done nothing except cost more tax dollars, raise hysteria and provide platforms for political fanatics. We as a country aren't solving the drug problem we are sweeping it under the rug hoping it is never seen again.
