In a surprise move yesterday, Republican Presidential candidate John McCain suspended campaigning for the U.S. Presidency to return to the Senate and work on a plan to fix the looming economic crisis facing the country. McCain phoned David Letterman to cancel a scheduled appearance on Letterman's Late Night show Wednesday night and also asked Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama to postpone the first Presidential candidate debate scheduled for Friday evening. David Letterman initially praised McCain's patriotism, but quickly changed his posture upon learning that instead of heading straight to the airport, McCain participated in a hastily arranged exclusive interview with CBS News Anchor Katie Couric. Late Night Show host David Letterman then attacked McCain's motives, suggesting that the campaign suspension was designed to invigorate sliding poll numbers.

Why Did John McCain Suspend His Campaign, Cancel Letterman Appearance, Seek Debate Postponement? Is the Face of American Politics Changing?

John McCain's campaign suspension has alternately been called brilliant, impulsive, and desperate, among other adjectives; but admirers and naysayers agree that John McCain's campaign suspension is a pivotal moment in the historic 2008 Presidential election campaign. The blogosphere is full of pro and con commentary ranging from admiration of McCain's leaderhip qualities inherent in the campaign suspension decision to challenge of his multitasking capability. One consensus that emerges from the commentary is that John McCain's announcement puts Barack Obama in a tenuous position where he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't suspend his own campaigning.

John McCain's statement announcing his campaign suspension described the nation's economic crisis in sobering terms:

I think this was a really dumb move on John McCain's part - although, after the bailout debaucle today, I think he's pretty screwed for the election :-)

Great reporting. McCain's poll numbers are down so he wanted a "time out" LOL Oh, and he spends over 5,000 per makeup session to get fancied up for his appearances per the Huff Post. McCain is out of touch, way out of touch, with normal America.

Thanks for doing this article. It wins my favorite article of the day prize! :-) In reality, we have to look at priorities...and in this case, I think McCain has his in the right place. His input and participation in choices being made is requested, wanted and needed. That speaks volumes about his knowledge and experience. We need that, in my opinon. I enjoyed this. :-) Five stars.

Great read Carol...call me naive, but I do believe McCain's objective was to do what he could to help the mess the country is in right now... I think Letterman is just miffed that he stopped to do an interview with Katie Couric.

Carol, I am truly impressed by your objectivity. First rate write up here.

How can anyone not see this for the political stunt that it is? McCain didn't even read the 3 page bail out plan until Tuesday, and now, just before an agreement is reached he declares an emergency. Just like the unlikely nomination of Sara Palin, McCain is demonstrating cynical contempt for the American people.

A very well written piece Carol. Looking at it objectively, I believe McCain made this move because that's the way he works. It's classic John McCain. Some in his party like that about him, others don't. As for what he can do to help the problem, right now the Democratic party is pretty much behind the plan, but many conservative Republicans are not. I believe McCain wants to try to bring his party together to avoid gridlock. Like you said, McCain may lose big on this, but that's what I admire about him. I know his opponents don't want to believe it, but his record proves he really is willing to go against the grain for what he believes to be best for the country. Hopefully, they will get things tied up today or tomorrow and the debate can go on as planned. If not, it's not that big of a deal to reschedule it.

I think Letterman is just miffed that McCain snuffed him for Katie and needs to "Get Over It". Just like McCain did when he was a POW, he is putting other peoples needs (the bail out) above his own.
