It is imperative to recognize the role of education in our society. For some, it serves as an investment for a successful future. Others view it as an instrument for keeping and passing on tradition. Maulana Wahiduddin Khan, Islam's spiritual ambassador, views education as "the knowledge of putting
one's potentials to maximum use."(1) A number of individuals rely on it for continuous growth and development.
What does education do to an individual? On a personal level, it brings opportunities of career advancement and a higher pay in the future. Its social essence comprise of learning, preparation for wise leadership and personal achievement, and opening one's mind to new ideas.
What does education bring to a nation? In the past, education became essential to ensure bequeathal of culture, social values, beliefs, practices, religion, skills and other worthwhile information from one generation to another. It aims to not only keep but strengthen their local way of life.
A few years back, a new trend in the academe became eminent across the sphere. Along came globalization.
My understanding of globalization lies in Jan Aart Scholte's definitions(2):
Globalization as internationalization - This would connote interdependence of one country to another, with more emphasis on trade and investment.
Globalization as liberalization - It simply aims to remove the barriers imposed by each government, to make transactions easier to execute.
Globalization as universalization - It indicates the impression of being available and/or accessible worldwide.
Globalization as westernization or modernization - This is an enormous change wherein one transforms its image to becoming more upgraded, liberated or Americanized.
Globalization as deterritorialization - It defines spatial relations amidst territorial spaces, places and borders.
All these inculcated in education was the birth of international education - perhaps another form of development that may be handed to the next generation.
