How the North was Won

Think you know about the heart of America and its citizens? The following facts may just surprise you.

Kansas City is full of Rednecks and Hillbillies: We have our share but most of the big-haired, bumper-sticker, tobacco-chewing, rifle-touting clans with poor dental hygiene live in southern Missouri. Remember the Missouri Compromise? This historical event overshadowed a lesser known feud over
the segregation of civilized folks and bubble-gum poppers. We (the North) won that battle.

Many of the remaining redneck spawn, in or around Kansas City, are weekend cowboy wannabes. These alpha-males sporting hats and boots, are found, beer-in-hand, in the modern, loud, country-themed, meat-marketing night clubs. Some members of this group do drive trucks that cost more than their house, but the closest thing these cowboys ever came to a horse is watching the American Royale (here in Kansas City) on TV.

Missouri is the Bible Belt: This is almost laughable or very lamentable depending on how you look at it. In Kansas City alone, we have four Las Vegas-style casinos (not run by Native Americans, incidentally), Missouri adopted the state lottery well before most liberal states came on board, Independence, Missouri (a suburb of Kansas City) was, in recent history, deemed the Crack Capitol of the World and now St. Louis is decidedly the most dangerous city in the U.S. In Missouri there is more pushing of drugs and bookie odds than biblical tracts.

There are many glorious churches here in Kansas City, as there are in many cities across the U.S. Among these majestic buildings lies the World Headquarters of the RLDS, which is located in the middle of Crack Town ... I mean, Independence, Missouri. I don't know anyone personally who actually attends the mega-structure for worship (or lately, any church for that matter), but it does make a nice place for high-school graduations. Good seating.

  • Kansas City is surrounded by myth and legend.
  • Kansas City rivals most major cities for better and worse.
  • Don't visit Kansas City during football season.

Southern Missouri is definitely in the Bible Belt and likewise a part of the Dixie culture. The majority of the state is definitely mid-western and not as severe as far as the religious right aspect is concerned.

I've never envisioned Kansas as being full of rednecks. I guess I still have visions of Dorothy and Auntie Em from the Wizard of Oz who didn't seem like rednecks. Fun article, Donna. :-)

I live north of Kansas City, was born in Oklahoma but raised in Missouri. My husband is a tobacco chewing, rifle toting, yee-haw yellin' man. My daughter boasts that we are not only redneck, but hillbilly too, lol. Sorry to burst one of your Missouri myths, but this state is full of rednecks....and I love it! Great article!

Good job. I know for a fact that Missouri is not the Bible belt, because I've lived in East Tennessee growing up and now Western NC and trust me, I know exactly where the Bible belt is LOL

I've lived in Missouri all my life. Grew up in Lee's Summit (A KC Suburb), moved to Columbia for 6 years, and now reside in Sedalia. I'd have to say that Sedalia has by far the largest density of "hicks" of anywhere I've lived. But it's not a bad town. :D Nice article.

I'm from Oklahoma and we get a lot of this same categorization. I appreciate your "take" on the matter, so to speak. Funny!

Nope - haven't written 'bout the family yet; but I hope I'm given enough time on this earth to get that done too! All I have right now are the genealogies of both families. Its ironic that I have ancestor's from the north and from the south of Missouri. It should be fun to write!

Ooops I had you two mixed up. There is the cute avatar. Wow that is fascinating Sharon ... have you ever written about your family?

LOL Susan -- Yes and things have changed here in recent years. Particularly crime but I also note I intended this to be parodical (my editor's note didn't update) -- in reality I'm pro religion, pro Chiefs and even pro redneck :-), but yes Southern Missouri (parts of it) are different. It is one of my favorite places to fish for trout though -- I love it around the Lake of the Ozarks area and Bennett Springs. BTW I miss your cute avatar :)
