Tips on Homework and Study Habits to Help Teens and Kids Learn Better
Just the mention of the word homework makes the kids cringe. Here are some ways that may help to make getting homework done less stressful for you and your kids.
You should have a specific area in the home that is to be used only for studying and for doing homework. This can either be in the child's room or maybe in an office space. Try to keep away as many
of the distractions as possible. If there are toddlers scurrying around the house keep them in a different room during study time if possible.
When it is study time make this no television time until they have finished all of their assignments. Everyday have a set period during the day specifically set for homework and studying. With a television on, nothing will get done.
Teenagers and even younger kids like to talk on the phone. If you child does have a cell phone of their own, have them to either turn the cell phone off or give the phone to you which you will return back to them after they have finished all of their assignments.
Keep a dictionary close at hand so that if they come across a certain word or phrase that they do not understand they will be able to look that word up and learn the meaning of it.
Allowing your kids to listen to the stereo all the time that they are studying seems to have a good affect on them so what you can do is purchase a set of headphones so the music will not disturb others in the house who may be studying also.
Set up a few breaks throughout study time and let them stretch their legs and take a breather and unwind their mind a minute. Have them a little snack waiting for them too.
Make sure that the study area has plenty of good lighting where they can see all of their materials well and give them a comfortable chair to sit in at the desk.
If your child does need any help with an assignment take the time to sit down and explain to the child what the problem is talking about and see if they can figure the answer out on their own.
