Hugh Marston Hefner was born on April 9, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. He and his brother Keith were raised by strict Methodist parents, Glenn and Grace. His Early Years
As he grew up, Hugh "Hef" Hefner attended Sayre Elementary School and Steinmetz High School. Although his IQ was 152 and at the "genius, or almost genius" level, his grades were average. Hugh Hefner used his time and energies to draw cartoons, start a school newspaper, and write. He was also an efficacious president of the student council.

After High School Graduation
Hugh Hefner graduated in 1944, then joined the United States Army. He spent his two-year stint as an infantry clerk. Afterwards, he took art classes. An interesting fact about Hugh Hefner of Playboy Fame is that he also earned a bachelor's degree in just two-and-a-half years from the University of Illinois. He drew cartoons for the Daily Illini and edited the campus magazine while he attended college. (In light of his popular "Playboy's Playmate of the Months", it's not surprising that) Hugh Hefner even launched a new piece called "Coed of the Month". He then took graduate courses in sociology at Northwestern University for a semester.

His Employment
Following college, Hugh Hefner he took a mediocre job as an assistant personnel manager in 1949, the same year he married Mildred Williams. The couple had a daughter, Christie in 1952, and son David in 1955.

In the following years, Hugh Hefner worked as an advertising copywriter, a promotion copywriter at Esquire Magazine, a newsstand promotion director, and as circulation manager of a children's magazine.

I learned so much from this. Odd to think of him working on a children's magazine and his mother was an early backer of Playboy (financially). Interesting!
