Friday morning, even as the Presidential debates scheduled for tonight was still on hold, John McCain was already declaring himself the winner. An ad placed in the online edition of the Wallstreet Jou
rnal by the McCain campaign appeared next to an article on the looming bailout of the financial industry. The ad reads only "McCain Wins Debate, Paid for by McCain-Palin 2008." The words appear over a picture of a smiling John McCain.

Although the ad later disappeared, it raises questions as to the McCain campaign's conception of reality. In some circles it's considered presumptuous to declare yourself the winner of a contest before that contest actually occurs. How would it be received if the Dallas Cowboys declared themselves the winner of the next Superbowl. One might even wonder if McCain believes he's already won the election.

Maybe he knows something the rest of us don't. The Presidential debate is currently back on for tonight. The debate will be held at University of Mississippi, in Oxford, Miss. and will be aired by nine networks at 9pm Eastern time.
