Feel Good About Them While You Can
Feel good about them while you can.And no, that above statement was not a threat from a Red Sox fan that we will kick their asses in the playoffs (as we will), but it was just a warning, if history is any indication, that that won't be
Take the Marlins for explain. In 1997, when they were a small market team with a tiny payroll heading from nowhere to the top, they were the feel good story. Two years later, they were an afterthough. In 2003, they did the same thing and two years later they were an afterthought once again. They looked destined to do the same thing this season. However, they feel out of contention and was anyone feeling good about them then. What did they have like 700 fans at their last game.
The Detroit Tigers in 2006 were 3 years removed from a 120 loss season and operating with a small budget. They make the World Series, everyone feels good. Their pitching staff makes like 500 errors in that World Series. Anyone feeling good anymore? Two years later, now operating with a huge payroll, they could finish in last. Anyone feel good about them?
Last year, the Rockies came from nowhere to win 21 of 22 and make the World Series. They got swept and got off to a horrible start this season. The end of it hasn't been too good either as they are almost doing the opposite of what they did last year. How are people feeling about them?
The Boston Red Sox are a great example of this. 1918-2004 they were the beloved underdogs that couldn't just seem to win. In 2004, they in. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon (not including me, I've been a Sox fan since I was 9). 2007, they win it again. Everyone complains "not again!"
You can call me whatever you want, a disgruntled Sox fan, pessimistic or whatever, but sooner or later, people won't feel so good about the Rays, whether it be if they choke down the stretch, or become a 9 figure budget team in 4th place, or if people just get sick and tired of them winning, it will happen.
