So perhaps your daughter saw this nifty handheld movie player in the store and just had to have it. Or, maybe you need a good gift for a niece, cousin, or sibling. The Disney Mix Max movie player certainly seems like an attractive option for any young princess-loving girl, but is it worth the money?

This player is a small pink device featuring the iconic Mickey Mouse head made out of navigational buttons. It is intended for young girls, and can play movies on its smaller screen. It costs about $75 new. If you're considering this as a nice gift, read on to find out if the player is right for you.

Body

The body of the device is rectangular in shape and completely rounded, devoid of any corners or sharp edges. It has a large hole for a strap or lanyard, and three simple buttons to make using the device simple and straight forward for younger users.

The device is hot pink in color, and features some printed flowers on the back of the device. The screen is fairly large and is located on one side of the device.

Features

Because this is meant for children, the specs are kept modest, and may not justify the price of the device. The screen is 2.2" and is a TFT, which is larger than what's found on most flash-based mp3 players.

The device has an internal memory capacity of 512GB, which isn't enough to hold much video, but enough for a few music albums. It has a small SD/MMC flash card expansion slot on the side, which will allow you to upgrade the storage capacity by 2GB.

Audio codec support includes MP3 and WMA. Video codec support includes WMV and MP4. With these codecs, it is possible to stick a couple of videos on the device, or a few TV episodes.

It comes with an internal rechargeable battery, so there's no need to deal with AAA batteries. It connects to a computer via a standard mini USB cable. It is a plug and play device, and can be used on both Windows and Mac OS X.

Issues

You will need to be able to convert video to add it to the device. If you don't know how to do this, you might find yourself frustrated. There are no easy, already converted videos to purchase and download, and no manual comes with the device beyond basic function.
