Product Review: Mustek PVR-H140 Personal Movie Player
Mustek is much like Coby - an off brand, a solution for those who need cheap, a name that stays at the bottom of the market by choice. They have a wide array of products, including digi
tal cameras and camcorders, mp3 players, and, of course, this PMP - personal movie player.
This device is intended to view and enjoy movies and other videos while on the go, and has a moderate price of $200. If you're looking for a handheld movie player and think the Mustek PVR H140 might be the right gadget for you, read on. Below is a review of this device, including any issues or problems you should be aware of.
Body
The body of this device is made entirely of plastic, and is silver in color. It is thick and square, with the majority of the front of the device taken up by the screen. Next to the screen is a series of five buttons used for navigation and control.
The expansion slot and connection ports are located on the left side of the device. There is a small external speaker on the front of the device, near the navigation buttons.
Overall, the unit measures in at approx. 4" x 3" x 1", which is a bit thick and hefty when compared to similar to products available on the market today.
Features
This device features 40GB of internal storage space via a hard drive. This is enough to hold approx. 10 full length theatrical movies. In addition, there is an expansion slot on the side that can take either SD cards or MMC cards - this is a useful feature for previewing photos directly from your digital camera.
The resolution for the device is VGA, and is plays videos in MPEG 4 format. It can also record video in the same resolution from a TV or DVD player, and the videos can be stored on the device or transfered to a computer.
The unit has a built-in microphone, which is useful for impromptu voice recording and memos.
Issues
Unfortunately, as with many cheap brands, this device seems to be plagued with issues. One of the biggest complaints is the battery life, which is only about two hours with each charge.
