Product Review: RCA Lyra X2400 Personal Movie Player
RCA has a wide array of mp3 players and personal movie players available on the market, but unfortunately few have found any sort of fame. Perhaps RCA's best known portable player is the Lyra series of
PMPs.
The Lyra sX2400 is a small, pocket-sized personal movie player that costs about $150 new. It is intended for those who do more video watching than audio listening, and offers a longer battery life-to-video watching ratio than most mp3 players. If you are in need of a small movie player to take along with you, the X2400 may be a good choice for you. Read on to find out if this player will fit your needs, as well as any issues you may need to know about before purchasing.
Body
The body of this device is small and square, and composed primarily of metal. It has two interesting edges at the top and bottom, which are rounded and have connection ports stylishly added to the ends.
The connection ports and switches are located around the sides edges, and the control buttons are on the bottom. This leaves the entire front of the device for the LCD display.
The device feels solid and durable in the hands, and seems like it is strong enough to handle being tossed around a bit.
Features
This device comes with a 3.5" TFT display, which is quite large for a portable player - big enough to allow one to easily read subtitles on a video.
The device does not have an internal hard drive, which would make it larger than it is. It instead uses Compact Flash (CF) cards, which can be purchased relatively cheap. It comes with a low capacity card to start with, but you will want to upgrade it to a larger card for any reasonable amount of video storage.
One of the nice features about this device is the ability to function as a DVR. You can hook it up to a VCR, DVD player, cable box, or TV and record whatever is playing, then later transfer it to a computer hard drive. This makes for a very small and portable DVR, and is a nice feature to have.
The device has a built in speaker for audio listening without headphones, but it is small and not something you'd want to use at a party.
