Sexual assault is taken very seriously by law enforcement; in fact, most cities have an entirely separate division for their investigation, usually called the sex crimes or special victims squad. When you report a sexual assault to the police, you will usually be partnered with a detective from that division, and your statement will be taken by them. It is estimated that more than 60% of sexual assaults go unreported, but don't feel that you have anything to be ashamed of. The faster you make it to the hospital or the police, the better your chances of seeing justice.Report Sexual Assault to the Police: Call 911
Sexual abuse is an emergency situation, so feel free to call 911 if you are unable to leave your location. For example, if you were assaulted in your home, you are well within your rights to summon the police to your address. Sometimes this is better because the police will want to investigate the crime scene, and you can give your statement and receive medical attention while the detectives go through your bedroom and the rest of your home. This can seem like an invasion of privacy, but often the police find evidence that isn't immediately visualized by the naked eye.
Report Sexual Assault to the Police: Go to the Emergency Room
If you have the ability to drive yourself (or if a friend can drive you) to the emergency room, this is another option. It is rarely advisable for the victim of sexual assault to get behind the wheel of a car -- you could be a danger to yourself or others -- but if you don't have extensive injuries or if you'd prefer to seek medical attention immediately, you might prefer this option. Simply let the emergency room attendant know that you were the victim of a sexual assault, and your case will be handled swiftly. You can receive antibiotics for any STD's you might have been exposed to and if you're a woman, the doctors can give you the Morning After Pill.
