Images, labels and expectations are attached to a person at birth because of that individual's sex. The course of your life is largely predetermined because of this biological factor. Unfortunately, this injustice and inequality are more than the circumstance of biological differences. The sociologi
cal notion that one's sex is inherited and one's gender is learned has manifested itself into 'gender stratification-males' and females' unequal access to power, prestige, and property.1

The gap between sexes varies across cultures and time. Women have always been viewed as having a lower status and being worth less than men. Take for instance a few passages from Chapter 27 of Leviticus of the King James' version of the Bible.

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular

vow, the persons shall be for the LORD by the estimation.

3 And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years

old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary.

4 And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels.2
