Many women spend a great deal of time and effort trying to achieve the appearance of beautiful, long eyelashes by using fake eyelashes, curling their eyelashes or using a lot of mascara for extra definition. But for women who already have long eyelashes, they may want to shift focus from their long eyelashes onto other parts of their face, such as their lips or cheekbones. Read on to learn some simple tips that can help you to downplay the appearance of long eyelashes.

Less is More

If you have long, thick, curly eyelashes; the last thing you may want to do is to add two coats of black mascara. This can make long eyelashes look even longer, promoting the "spider" look, that many women dread as they look back at their reflection in the mirror. Two coats or more of mascara can also lead to a lot of smudging, which makes eyes look tired and puffy rather than rejuvenated.

Clear Mascara

Clear mascara will coat the eyelashes and separate them evenly, but without drawing too much attention to the eye area. Invest in a good quality, clear mascara that will condition the eyelashes and give them just the right definition without going overboard. Naturally long eyelashes often look much more defined after they have received a coat of clear mascara than they do with black or brown mascara.

Eyeliner

The careful, skilful application of eyeliner can bring out the true beauty of eyes. Rather than concentrate on long eyelashes, work on defining the outer eye area by using soft, wispy strokes of eyeliner.

Takeaways
  • Use less mascara
  • Clear mascara can define eyelashes, but still help to downplay them
  • Eyeliner can bring out the beauty of the eyes without drawing too much attention to the eyelashes

I'd give anything to have that problem. Mine are short and straight.

I wish I had that problem.

Dittos, Erin Thursby. I never liked the idea of trying to "make up" my eyes, so have never used mascara. People seem to find my natural eyelashes adequate. One of the seldom mentioned advantages of having dark hair. (Maybe now other women will come out of the closet and admit that we actually have these, and other attributes the fashion industry tells women in general to "make up" for presumably not having...let's face it, if we are reasonably young and healthy, and not outrageously disfigured, we have very little to "make up" for.)

I wish I had this problem! I lost all my eyelashes when I was in a furnace explosion years ago. My eyelashes grew back within a few weeks but were never as long or as thick afterward.

I just don't wear mascara. Pretty simple. Funny to an article on it.

My mother always said too much mascara on long eyelashes gave a woman a "raccoon" appearance. Ha. Very good read!
