I seem to be becoming an expert at starting a pattern for my daughter and ending up with something for myself ... some sort of freudian slip, maybe? I'm not sure, but when I started these sweater socks, the first time they came out ... well, let's just say that my kid doesn't have clown feet.
These socks have a contrasting-color toe and heel, and since each part of the sock is made as a separate piece, the color combinations are endless. Try making the sock all one color except for the toe and heel, all one color, or 5 different colors. The top of the foot is ribbed, and the toe and heel have reinforcing "seams".
In all, this is a very easy project which can be completed in an hour or two. Vary the size of needle used to achieve different sizes of sock, or different kinds of yarn (adjusting needle size appropriately) to achieve different "weights" of sock. The directions below will fit a child's foot from about size 12 shoe through size 2.
The Sweater Sock Pattern
Worsted Weight Yarn (1-5 colors), Size G Hook
Special Stitches: Join Slip Stitch - Match sides of work, slip stitch through the front loop closest to you to the back loop opposite. Continue for the number of stitches indicated.
Front of Sock
Chain 45.
Row 1: Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. Turn.
Row 2: Chain 1. Working in the back loops only, half-double crochet in each single crochet across. Turn.
Row 3: Chain 1. Single crochet in each half-double crochet across. Turn.
Rows 4-10: Repeat rows 2 and 3. Finish off.
Back of Sock
Change color (optional), joining with a slip stitch to the last stitch made.
Row 1: Chain 1, single crochet in the first single crochet and in each of the next 19 single crochet. Slip stitch in each of the next 2 single crochet. Single crochet in each of the remaining 21 single crochet.
Row 2: Chain 1, single crochet in the next 21 single crochet. Slip stitch in the next 2 slip stitch. Single crochet in each of the remaining 20 single crochet.
