We love Chinese Buffets. Some are better than others. We were in New York visiting friends and they suggested New York Buffet located at 207 Dolson Avenue in Middletown, New York. They can be reached at (845) 344-3588ý. We went there at dinnertime on a Friday night. There were quite a few customers though the restaurant wasn't filled. We were seated at a comfortable booth and ordered iced tea. The waitress was very accommodating. She cleared our plates immediately and continued to fill up our glasses.
I noted that the restaurant did not look like one large cafeteria. It had some attractive pictures on the wall and a couple of very fancy chandeliers.
There were several islands of food and an area with ice cream. The food was very good. I'd go back again in a heartbeat. Dinner prices were $10.99 per person which was a bargain.
Two negatives: One was the labeling of the food. Some items were not labeled and I had to ask a staff person what it was or some was just mislabeled. That should not happen. People have allergies and/or don't eat certain food so for example the veggie rolls I mention below I only knew weren't egg rolls with meat because they looked different. Two was the bathroom. It was being cleaned when I went in but it is old and needs some updating.
The Food
New York Buffet serves crab legs which is a real draw for us; however, they were constantly running out of them and when we finally got them they were a tad salty and on the small side. Still these are expensive so having them in a buffet is always a treat.
The cheese wontons were excellent. They were small and crispy. What I liked the most was that they were not called crab Rangoon with cheese in them so they called them what they are. The vegetable rolls (Spring rolls) were nice and crispy and filled with veggies. I would have liked them to be separated from the egg roll; however.
Two of the most delicious dishes were the coconut shrimp and the coconut chicken. I happen to love coconut but everyone at my table thought these dishes terrific. They had a distinct taste of coconut so the word in from of either chicken or shrimp wasn't just a word.
