The movie Choke based off of one of Palanhuik's best novels starts the story of a sexaholic named Victor. This twelve-step breaking jerk regularly preys on various women, including ladies released from penitentiary to attend twelve-step meetings. He's also an Irish indentured servant, the backbone of colonial America. He's also that person you rescue from choking at expensive restaurants. Plus, his mom's crazy.

That about sums up the novel and the book. Both parallel very well. Hollywood didn't seem to make this flick too Hollywoodish. From the beginning of the movie is raw sexual excitement that goes far into the very back of the movie. Not to pun anything, though the beads make a cameo too. If you haven't read the book, I won't go into further detail. Overall, great film. Holds true to the novel as much as it could. Though the ending is not the same by any means, I didn't seem to care much since it relates to the anti-hero's first sexual encounter. Where it all began, it shall end, right?

Still, pretty well crafted.

The love interest, Dr. Paige Marshall, watches over Victor's mother who has a bad case of forgetting who and what her son is. Not to mention the fact that she's a former kidnapper who's anti-establishment sentiments are more self-indulging addictions, much like Victor's chronic sexaholism, than anything else. But I digress...I heard some criticism that Paige did not perform as well as she could have. That she was just there reading lines and not actually acting. I'm more into the director's intentions school of thought. I believe that the acting was good enough and that she was supposed to be all mono-tone, dull, and slightly annoying. This being in large part because she too is a mental health patient who likes to spread rumors that Victor's the second comming of a half-clone Jesus.
