New Zealand has the distinction of being the first place on Earth to see the sun on Christmas morning. New Zealand is the first country on the western side of the International Date Line, the place where each day begins. New Zealand is south of the equator, so it is summer time for them, schools are closed for summer break and adults are on vacation as well. As soon as Christmas is over, families head out for their summer vacations. And the kids have almost two whole months to enjoy their Christmas presents.
Christmas dinner in New Zealand is much like it is in Great Britain with turkey for the main course and Christmas Pudding for desert. But there are always exceptions to the rule and the beautiful New Zealand summer makes Christmas a perfect time to have a picnic on the beach, or a back yard barbeque. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of outdoor activities at Christmas in New Zealand. What could be better than a Christmas parade ?
The first Christmas parade is held at the beginning of December. Just like in the United States, New Zealand has a long Christmas season, with stores and shopping malls getting their sales started off with a bang. When coming to New Zealand for Christmas, try to get in as early in December as possible. You will have the chance to get Christmas presents that you would not be able to get anywhere else, but just like here, those who shop early get the best selection.
Santa Claus brings the presents on Christmas Eve. Father Christmas had the job for many years, but in most places he has been replaced with the western Santa. Christmas Day is spent at church and the main meal is eaten at lunch time. Then it is time to visit family and friends. The houses are decorated much like they are here, with one exception. Pine trees do not grow in New Zealand, but they have a tree called the Pohutukawa. It is an evergreen and it has the most beautiful red flowers. It is just perfect for a Christmas tree. A Christmas tree that comes with its own decorations.
