A $700 billion plan to bailout the United States Economy has failed to gain enough support to pass through the House of Representatives. Presented by the Bush administration, and amended to include over-sight on how a lot of the money was going to be spent, the bailout proposal finally made it to a vote on Monday afternoon. The results were not favorable, as both Democrats and Republicans made themselves heard by failing the bill in its current form. In support of the bill were 140 Democrats and 67 Republicans, so there was a large sway of Republican votes that ended up really killing the bill. To pass, the bill only needed to attain 218 of the 435 possible votes (or 50% + 1) and they couldn't quite muster enough support when it finally came down to people weighing in with their opinions.

The vote sent shock-waves towards Wall Street, where a constant eye was kept on what was taking place in the House, and as the nay votes continued to rise, the Dow Jones began to react in a negative fashion. In a direct correlation between the nay votes increasing, the Dow Jones Industrial Average began to drop, and at times the drop was around a 700 point loss on the day. At the end of the voting, when it had been rejected, the Dow Jones was down around 500 points for the day. The Dow Jones is expected to go down even further for the day, as news of the failure to pass this bailout plan will spread across the country.

Wonder if the Senate one is going to help or just make things worse?

Great article. I'm reading through the news today and it's embarrassing how many media outlets, politicians, and 'experts' are treating the American people as idiots who opposed the bill as a result of ignorance to a complex situation: that we don't understand the potential ramifications if a solution is not reached or that we somehow think the problem will only effect a privileged few. I, like many others out there, have a pretty good grasp on the situation and opposed the measure mostly because there was very little oversight and essentially no regulation! I'm not opposed to federal intervention; I am, however, completely opposed to any individual (especially an unelected one) being granted such sweeping authority over the process. Congress made the right move, they just need to realize that for may of us, our objection was based on knowledge and understanding, not fear and ignorance.

Excellent reporting on this- I heard some news reports too from financial experts saying they have been always optimistic about our economy...until now...that was kind of scary.

Have to laugh at how much time and wffort was put in promoting all the work McCain did to assure it would pass - well until it failed!

A senator said on Glen Beck today taht we are doomed if this passes, and we are doomed if it doesn't.

Anything to make that arrogant jerk in the White House look bad is worth it!

40% of Democrats apposed the bill, so this is not the blame of partisan politics. The phone lines was tied up all morning on capitol hill with most Congressman reporting that their constituents were not in favor of a bailout. As far as I am concerned if capitalist Wall Street goes crazy and looses value because they could not get a socialist style bailout, tough!

Interesting, I had read that this was most likely going to pass. Thanks for the information!
