When choosing a name for a new baby, couples have many different sources of inspiration. There is a vast supply of baby naming books on the market that offer thousands of names for both sexes that provide the origin as well as the meaning of the name. Many couples choose to name their new addition after a beloved family member. Others simply have a certain amount of affection for a particular name and have the matter decided fairly quickly. If you are searching for a name for your upcoming arrival and are a tried and true soap opera fan, you may be tempted to name your baby after a popular or favorite soap opera character. Here are some points to consider before turning to your favorite daytime serial for your new baby's name.

Soap Opera Characters Often Have Unique Names. For as long as soap operas have been on the air, viewers have been introduced to characters with extremely unique names. If you wish to give your child a name that is not as traditional as "Kate," "Jack," or "Anna," you will surely be introduced to such interesting and unique names like "Ridge," "Vienna" and "Dallas," by paying close attention to the names of the characters on soap operas.

Your Child May Get Teased For Having A Soap Opera Inspired Name. If you choose to name your baby after a character on a soap opera with a name that is fairly unheard of any place other than on television, your child may find themselves getting teased once they enter elementary school. Some may argue that most every child gets teased for one reason or another and this should not deter parents from naming their child anything they choose, but others feel that life is difficult enough with children's tendency to pick on each other and parents should not provide any ammunition by bestowing a very flashy and unusual name on them.

Whoops. What a fresh, unique topic! I wouldn't do this no way, no how as I believe a child SHOULD have their own identity.

I have to agree with Charlotte. I would certainly never tell the child it was a name on a soap opera. There are too many weird names now that no one will even notice.

Great points! Your name can affect how others treat you and how you feel about yourself.

Parents need to really think long and hard about what is best for their children rather than simply fulfilling a dream of naming their child after a soap opera actor or actress. I've come across children that I've worked with who have been given very outlandish names by their parents. Sophie

I think there has been a fair amount of study on the importance of name choice in relation to success and self-confidence in one's life. Of course, there are limits to its impact, countered by other factors, but a poorly chosen name adds to the hurdles one must overcome in youth, if not beyond. Good topic Lisa!

If it is because you like the name, why not? If is is because you like the character, I would give it more thought. Great points, Lisa.
