The Funniest Scary Films for Fun Halloween Party Viewing

Buffy: The Vampire Slayer & Death Becomes Her Are Silly & Scary Movies

Halloween is a tricky time for ghouls, ghosts and goblins. It's also time to scare many of us silly. The scary part is the spooky holiday's fun appeal. Though it's even more fun to blend those scares with gales of laughter. Hollywood has concocted some
great cinema scare fests which also double as laugh fests.

So when your friends come to call for a Halloween horror bash, mix things up in the viewing selections with some comic choices. Here are some of the silliest, scariest and thrilling fright flicks which also offer big belly laughs.

Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)

Those American lords of laughter Bud Abbott and Lou Costello made more than a few scary funny films, but this is where the frightful funniness really started.

Their Hold That Ghost (1941) was also a haunted romp, and did predate this one by seven years, but this marks the duo's first meeting with the classic monsters from Universal Studio's stable. The title may only mention Frankenstein, but here the bumbling boys also encounter vampire king Dracula and the scruffy man wolf himself the Wolfman. Bela Lugosi reprises his classic Dracula role and Lon Chaney Jr. his Wolfman, however Glenn Strange plays Frankenstein's monster instead of the originator of the role from Universal's Frankenstein (1931). The film's original title was to be The Brain of Frankenstein, but was subsequently changed.

The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967)

Before there was vampire slaying Buffy - there were the fearless vampire killers. This gang had some real bite.

Originally entitled Dance Of the Vampires, this lushly photographed film from director Roman Polanski, mixes broad comic silliness with classic horror trappings. Sadly, it was cut up by a studio executive and perhaps marketed badly resulting in a less than enthusiastic critical reception. Years later, it's now seen as something of landmark film to deftly juggle the funny and the frightful elements so effectively. Two years later, the movie's star Sharon Tate and Polanski's wife was brutally murdered by real life monsters - Charles Manson and his crazy clan.

Fright Night (1985)

Never cared much for Death Becomes Her or Buffy, but truly enjoyed the others. I saw Fearless Vampire Killers during its first run in theaters, actually at a preview when the original title was still attached to the film.
