The book, How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed tells the tale of a woman after World War II in Eastern Europe, when Stalin and the Soviets dominated the area. The book mentions a bunch of little stories, some big and some small, that paint the picture of what life was like during that time period. People's lives were pretty tough during that time period, but the book puts a positive spin on everything and makes it interesting. The book uses some of the stories from the author, and some stories from other people to help convey this image of what life was like. As we know, the leadership of Stalin was devastating to the people, many people were killed that didn't need to be killed. However, by staying positive, the author and some of these other people were able to get through it. Being able to make jokes may have not proven anything large to the Communists, but it let the people know that even though the Communists were doing everything in their power to take all that they had, there were some things that they couldn't take, like there positive spirit and attitude. This, in a sense, kept these people alive, and gave them hope in a time when there wasn't much to look forward too.
