Previewing the Oscar Candidates: Best Supporting Actress
A lot of people gather around the television to watch the Oscars only to find out that most of the nominees they have never heard of. That's why I'm here. I'm here to prepare you for next year's Oscars by telling you ahead of time which
movies you should be sure to check out. If you want to be familiar with the actress that could be nominated for the Best Supporting Actress category then these are some performances that you should watch this year.
Amy Adams, Doubt
Amy Adams broke through with an Oscar nomination in Junebug a few years ago and followed that up with a Golden Globe nomination in earlier this year. If Amy Adams keeps this up she could be a regular at the Oscars. This year's Oscar worthy performance is in the movie Doubt.
Cate Blanchett, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
There is some debate about whether Cate Blanchett's role will be considered for Best Actress in a Leading Role or Best Supporting Actress. If Blanchett is in the Best Supporting Actress category then she'll definitely be nominated but if she is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role instead then her co-star Taraji P. Henson could slip in there instead.
Catherine Keener, The Soloist
Jamie Foxx is back again in another musical movie but Foxx is not getting the praise he did for Ray. This time around Robert Downey Jr. and Catherine Keener are getting all the buzz for their supporting roles.
Charlize Theron, The Road
The Road is a post-apocalyptic tale and because of that some Oscar voters may frown upon how dark it will be. But sometimes the supporting actress nominees are pretty weak and the voters will have to nominate something they might have regularly. There's also question about how big the role is.
Kathy Bates, Revolutionary Road
Kathy Bates went home with a trophy the first time she was nominated with an Oscar but hasn't been able to repeat that success. Will Bates finally win another Oscar 18 years after her first?
Patricia Clarkson, Elegy
Patricia Clarkson is not one of the favorites but the Supporting Actress category is weak enough that I think we'll see a surprise entry and Clarkson is as good as the other choices.
