Getting a new puppy is a great occasion for your family. It is amazing how such a small and furry puppy can warm the hearts of so many people. However, it quickly becomes apparent how much work a puppy is. House training a puppy is usually the most difficult task that a new dog owner has to figure out. Each dog is different in the fact that some of them give signals that they need to go and others do not. Some puppies are house trained within a week and other puppies can take months to be completely potty trained. The bell method is an easy way for almost all dogs to get house trained. Here are the steps for this simple house training method for your puppy.

First off, you will need a strong string and a couple bells. You need to either mount the bells to the door frame or hang them on the door knob of the door that you will take the puppy out of. You will also need to place the leash (if it applies) by this door as well. Watch the puppy closely for the first couple of days and notice their behavior. You should be able to tell when they need to go by the second day or so. This is step one of the bell house training.

One important thing to remember is to not discipline a dog for going to the bathroom in the house unless you catch them in the act of doing it. If you see them, say "Outside" loudly and immediately take the dog outside. It is important to keep a close eye on the puppy and be consistent with everything when you are house training.

The second step is when you are taking the dog out to go the bathroom you should have him ring the bell. Hold his leash and stand tap the door above where the bells are. Wait until he jumps up and hit's the door (thus hitting the bells) and then put his leash on. You ring the bells now and say "Outside" and take him out. You ringing the bell will make him connect the sound of the bell with going outside. It is important to do this every time you take the puppy out during potty training.

I can see how a dog could be trained that way because our dog nudges the blind on the back door when she has to go out. She waits for us, too!
