Smyrna, Georgia -- In the wake of hurricanes Gustav and Ivan, several cities in the southeastern United States are nearly paralyzed by fuel shortages. Cities including Atlanta, Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Ashboro, and Chattanooga have all been affected by shortages. In Atlanta, shortages have forced motorists to undertake extensive searches for fuel and then to wait in long lines at gas stations. This article recounts my personal experiences looking for gas and provides a survey of the gas situation in the Atlanta's Vinings neighborhood and the town of Smyrna.

After two weeks of very conservative driving habits, my wife and I were in serious need of gasoline. On the way home from work on the afternoon of Friday, September 27, I noticed that the four gas stations I normally pass during my commute were completely sold out. On Friday night, during the presidential debate, I drove to another six gas stations in the Atlanta area around Smyrna and Vinings. All six were completely out of gas. We were really worried about whether we would be able to make it through another work weekwithout refueling.

On Saturday, September 28, Atlanta television news featured non-stop stories about gas shortages and gas lines. In the evening, my wife and I set out to get gas for our Chevy Cavalier figuring that many locals would be distracted by the big Georgia-Alabama football game, first we went to the QuikTrip in the historic Vinings neighborhood and found it empty. We heard that gas stations around the Atlanta Road and I-285 interchange might have gas and set a course in that direction.

Takeaways
  • Most gas stations in Atlanta are out of gas.
  • Gas stations with gas have long lines.
  • Even at 2 a.m. I experienced a 15-car gas line and was limited to a $40 purchase.

I also feel for you, we have been going through the same thing in Nashville, though it is getting much better here now. The previous 2 weeks were nightmares though.

I feel for you. It is crazy that these problems are so localized.

We well understand your plight. We live in the Atlanta area and have seen the long lines and "no gas" signs at station after station. Hopefully, this misery will end soon.

I have been able to get gas in NE of Atlanta but my husband is driving his premium car on regular gas.

Gas in Atlanta is sooooo bad. I live northeast of the city and thee are only two or three gas stations serving gas within a thirty minute drive of myself. I spent over an hour waiting in line for gas only to get up to the pump and they were out of gas. It's terrible, people aren't able to get around the city like normal, Atlanta is one of the nations largest commuter town. Even the radio stations are allowing people to call in and broadcast where a gas can be found, but there are always lines around 40 cars deep for each pump (not an exaggeration). I hope this gets better soon, it's terrible!

Greenville, SC is also having difficulties, but not nearly so bad as Atlanta. Pray that they get the gas flowing soon! If only they had already been drilling in all the drillable places, maybe this wouldn't be happening.
