Birthplace of Amelia Earhart
In 1804 the Lewis and Clark expedition made camp near an area that would later develop into Atchison, KS. Due to the area's easy landing site along the Missouri river, Lewis and Clark would not be the only famous explorers to stop on their trips west. The French used the area prior to theToday, the city of Atchison, KS, is home to about 10,000 people who well know that their home was the birthplace of the world's most famous female aviator, Amelia Earhart. Earhart was born in 1897 in a home that was built by her Judge Alfred Otis. Otis was the grandfather of Amelia. The home is now a museum that honors the early life of Amelia that took place within its walls as well as her career as an aviator. The Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum is located on Terrace Street and is open year around, closed on holidays. An antique air show is held on Memorial Day at the aptly named local airport, Amelia Earhart Airport.
The Atchison County Museum also holds displays pertaining to Earhart's life. Other exhibits tell the story of this area's place in history and the life of its people. The museum is open daily. The Evah C. Cray Historical Home Museum displays a historic home with period furnishings and a country store. The museum is open daily during the summer and at other times throughout the year.
Near to Atchison is the city of Leavenworth. Leavenworth is home to Fort Leavenworth and the well known prison. The fort includes a Frontier Army Museum with displays period Army and civilian items of the pioneer days on the prairie. One item of particular interest is a horse drawn carriage that was used by Abraham Lincoln during a trip to the area. There is also a national cemetery and a monument to the Buffalo Soldiers.
