Laparoscopic Surgery

Laproscopic surgery is a modern form of surgery that is carried out with very small incision of 0.5 to 1.5 cm only, as compared to normal surgeries where the incisions are relatively larger. It's also called minimally invasive surgery or keyhole surgery. In this procedure of surgery, the doctor is guided by a lens connected to a video camera that gives the accurate image of the organ to be operated. Its a part of the endoscopy surgery.Nowadays, it's used for many common problems like kidney removal, gall bladder, prostate surgery and alike. Laparoscopic surgery also uses carbon dioxide gas that is used to inflate the abdomen or the surrounding areas for a clear view of the gland to be operated. There are many advantages of laproscopic surgery over regular surgery. They are:
· Small incisions for the operation which means less blood loss.
· Quick healing of the cut.
· Less post operative pain.
· Fast discharge from hospital and normal activities.
· Normal diet after two or three days.
Presently, this form of surgery is also used for prostate cancer where the prostate gland is operated out so that the cancer cells cannot spread further. The advantage of laparoscopic surgery in case of cancer is that the surgery removes the complete cancer cells effectively.
But, laparoscopic surgeries have some disadvantages as well. The electrodes inserted to carry the surgery may give unseen electric shocks to surrounding tissues and burn them. Its very rare but may happen due to some carelessness. Secondly, the coagulation of blood has some problems if the patient has had any other open surgery earlier.
Whatever may be the disadvantages, they are minimal and can be neglected in favor of the benefits that this kind of surgery offers. More and more advanced techniques have been introduced and today we have the robotic laparoscopic surgery where the work is carried out by machines for more perfection under a team of doctors.
