"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter"..... Martin Luther King Jr. Thanks to: http://yborcitystogie.blogspot.com/2008/09/fellow-floridian-andy-lacasse.html

I don't know Andy Lacasse personally, but I have known quite a few in Florida just like him. Ignorant. But, that isn't what I used to think.

After several years of living in St. Augustine Florida, my opinion of the people of Florida has changed drastically. When we originally moved to Florida a few years ago with my husband's job, I had the impression that most of the residents of Florida were retired Snow Bunnies from across the country. Liberal or conservative, I had the mistaken idea that they were all fairly intelligent, tolerant individuals. I knew their were people who were born and raised in what is truly a Deep Southern State.

After living there and now with Andy Lacasse's example, I am afraid the once glowing opinion of Florida residents I used to have, has changed drastically. Coming from the depths of North Carolina during the 1960's, and being white, I recognize extreme racism on sight. After moving from NC in the 80's and moving to Texas, I realized that even though Texas is Southern and racist, it was a step to a higher education on the subject.

If you haven't heard the story yet, you can Google his name and come up with it. Andy Lacasse is a Barefoot Bay, Florida resident who took the time to nail a piece of white posterboard to a stick and use his Sharpie to write: "OBAMA, HALF BREED MUSLIN"! Ok, I know it is misspelled, but Mr. Lacasse spelled it this way. First of all, it is bad enough to say something so hateful and negative, but to misspell the damn thing. Come on Andy!

He was expressing his heartfelt views about the campaign and about Barack Obama. The sad thing is he is typical, deep south mentality.

Takeaways
  • Ignorance still dominates us
  • No such thing anymore as a Pure White Race-Thank God.
  • If this is Superior then I resign my position in the white race
Did You Know?
As few as 4 years ago, I lived the attitude of ignorant racists in Florida. And I am white.

Racism is more pervasive than many realize. America is changing, but we still have a long way to travel before we can truly say "liberty and justice for all" without cringing.

Dear Rose: On the "good news" front, I just saw a poll tonight that says that Obama has something like a 50 to 42 % lead in Florida polls. The man is (obviously) a whole lot smarter than either of the opposition candidates. McCain seems to take pride in having graduated 5th from the bottom of his class and what can I say about Sarah Palin that hasn't already been said. For once, let's elect some smart people. We've tried electing the dumbest President of the past century and look how THAT has turned out.

I'm from the South, and just to prove to the ignorant folk's that even though we were raised by racist idiot's, thank god some of us had enough common since to not judge by the color of the skin, but to like or dislike someone by their beliefs or action's. I don't feel the color of one's skin should make any one's decision for voting for the next President. I'm simply voting for who I believe can help this Nation. The sad thing Rose, is just when you feel racism is finally getting better and less in the light, out comes the ugliness again. Keep preaching, maybe if Andy can't read, maybe he can hear!
