Gwen Ifill, the PBS anchor of "Washington Week" who will be moderating the debate between the vice presidential contenders, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden, on October 2 in St. Louis, Missouri, seems to be all over the news. She broke her ankle. She's writing a book that is due out on Inauguration Day 2009. The first gets passing mention by many news organization, but the second is picking up even more impetus going into the debate. Why is the book gaining interest? Because, according to Matt Drudge and other conservatives, the book shows her blatant bias toward the Democratic side of the debate.

The McCain-Palin camp say they knew nothing of the book.

The Debate Over The Moderator Of The Palin-Biden Debate

World Net Daily ran an article by Bob Unruh, entitled "VP debate moderator Ifill releasing pro-Obama book," was picked up by the Drudge Report and is making its rounds of the internet, causing a stir. Unruh makes the assertion that the book is biased toward the Obama campaign and that makes a considerable argument against Ifill and her ability to conduct a nonpartisan debate. Unruh leans heavily on the Michelle Malkin blog, where that particular writer said of Ifill, "She's so far in the tank for the Democrat presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running out." Unruh also cites as evidence Ifill's dismissiveness toward Sarah Palin when Ifill has reported on Palin's speeches. It is being posited that, since Ifill's booksales are dependant on an Obama victory, she can in no way moderate in an unbiased fashion.

On the other side of the debate, Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post says that Gwen Ifill's upcoming book has been no secret, that it is common knowledge that the PBS anchor was writing a book on the next generation of black politicians called Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. Kurtz contends, "There is no evidence that the book will be favorable to the Democratic nominee."

Gwen Ifill Cannot Moderate Vice Presidential Debate Because She is Black

It's A Black Thing: Senator Barack Obama, according to conservative bloggers and pundits, is getting an unfair advantage with PBS anchor Gwen Ifill's moderation of the Biden Palin vice presidential debate in St. Louis because she wrote a book about black politicians, with Senator Obama as part of the subject matter, and with Obama's name on the title.

This is a really silly discussion, why not say that a white man cannot moderate any of the political debates when white men are involved or do we think that because she is black that she has an inherent predisposition to be less than professional. You people need to shut up about this nonsense and stop being a bunch of racist jerks.

I'm a big fan of Gwin Ifill she is an accurate unibiased journalist, but I think Obama is a snake in the grass, if Ifill were a candidate I would vote for her but I don't intend to vote for Obama.

You and I and thank goodness if the polls are correct more and more Americans are going for Obama. If I were on the other side I must admit I'd be crying something out of desperation. I'm sure she will as bias as Katie Couric:)

Agreed, Kim, for the most part. But it's all about her being black. The rest is b.s. Even Howard Kurtz came right out and said the same thing on an interview he did on CNN. And like I said, they're making an issue before the fact. Sort of like McCain winning the debate before he even got to Mississippi.

I published an article today on this same topic. I haven't heard anyone say anything about her not moderating because she's black. I believe Ifill will do what's right because she is a professional, and if she doesn't her reputation is on the line. It could go in either direction. She may be so sensitive to criticism that she gives Biden a hard time to make it look like she's not biased. I wouldn't want to be in her shoes either way. Oh, and the book is an issue because of what's in the title, 'Age of Obama' and her talking about "the impact of Barack Obama's stunning presidential campaign." She is clearly an Obama supporter who will benefit financially if he is elected, which is fine if she can manage to be objective while moderating the debate.

Agreed, Charlene. But there is no proof that Ifill is or will be. Conservative blowhards like Drudge and othes are blowing a book out of proportion that does not even have a chapter in it about Obama. He is mentioned with several other black politicians. It's about the black political movement.

Thank you, Cindy. I almost mentioned that as well, but didn't want to distract from the real issue here.

She shouldn't be moderating if she is going to be biased.

Ifill is African American but is also a woman so I'll be watching for any bias against Senator Biden.
