Tough economic times seem to have descended on America virtually out of nowhere. Weren't we all just merrily marching along with our credit card debt, unpaid student loans and generally overblown budgets without a care in the world. Now we are find ourselves, almost overnight in the midst of what some call a recession and some another depression like the one that hit Americans in 1929. Whatever term you decide you like better really matters little because most Americans, except the exorbitantly rich, recognize that we are in the midst of tough economic times. We turn of course to the President, his economic advisers, the Federal Reserve, Congress and the contenders in the presidential election of 2008 to show us the way out of this financial freeze. While we wait expectantly for the professionals to crunch the numbers and come up with a solution, we can rely on the ever present help offered by these five scripture passages.

1." Seek first His kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you" ( Matt: 6:33 ) . In all of the turmoil that swirls around the economic life of our American nation, discussions among family members, business associates and friends is centered around fear about their jobs, income, savings and ability to get credit for purchases of large ticket items. The gigantic plunge on Wall St. and the failure of several huge banks has injected a large dose of borderline panic that has sent people scurrying to shore up their funds.

Takeaways
  • Americans are facing some tough economic times.
  • For Christians there is help to be found in reflecting on scripture
  • Seeking God's kingdom and loving our neighbor can help get us through tough times.
