As we get the political showdown underway with Joe Biden and Sarah Palin going up against each other in their first debate, but we want to take a look at the presidency in a different light to say that the seat of Vice-President was unfilled during a president's term. There were 12 presidents that didnt have a vice-president during their time in office. Some of them didnt have a sitting vice-president for well over a year into their term and this was due to the fact that either someone was not asked to run alongside the presidential candidate. These are the twelve presidents who didnt have a VP running mate at the time of their election and inauguration into office:

John Tyler

Millard Filmore

Franklin Pierce

Andrew Johnson(VP under Abraham Lincoln and position wasnt filled when he took office)

Ulysses S. Grant(Second term VP Henry Wilson died in office leaving the position open for more than a year)

Chester Arthur(VP under James Garfield and the VP seat sat empty when Arthur took office)

Grover Cleveland(Thomas Hendricks who was VP at the time died just 9 months into Cleveland's term in office and the seat VP seat sat vacated)

William McKinley(first VP Garret Hobart died in office in 1899 and a replacement wasnt sworn in until Spring 1900 under Theodore Roosevelt)

William Taft(James Sherman who was VP under Taft died in office shortly before Taft's term ended and the seat sat vacated)

Calvin Coolidge(VP under Warren G. Harding and the VP seat sat vacated until Coolidge took office in 1929)

Harry Truman(VP under Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the position sat empty until Truman was elected to office in 1948)

Lyndon B. Johnson(VP under John Fitzgerald Kennedy, but the seat sat vacated until Johnson took office in 1964)
