Turn boring old varnished wood candle holders into a piece of sassy pink and black damask art, that is sure to turn a few heads! (Hint: Inexpensive varieties can be found at stores such as Target or Pier One. Also, consider checking closeout stores, such as Marshall's, for a variety that suits your need. Remember to look at the shape of the candle holder, not the color as you will be painting over it.)For this project, you will need:
- One or more varnished wood candle holders
- Medium grit sandpaper
- Soft cloth or tack cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Ballet Slipper
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black
- Damask wall art stencil (any design or size)
- Pencil
- Cardstock
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Light hold spray adhesive
- Masking tape
- Newspaper or a large drop cloth
The beginning step in this project, is to lay your sheet of cardstock flat on the self healing mat. With a pencil, trace the damask wall art stencil onto the paper. (Repeat this process if the design does not cover the whole sheet of paper, or as desired.) Carefully use a craft knife to cut out the damask design. Set aside.
Cover your work area well with a few sheets of newspaper or a large drop cloth. Gently sand the varnished wood candle holder with medium grit sandpaper. Keep sanding until all areas have been adequately "scuffed". Gently wipe away any excess dust with a soft cloth or tack cloth.
Spray the candle holder fully with an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Wait thirty minutes before adding a second coat of primer to the wood. Allow the candle holder to dry for two to three hours.
Apply four to five complete coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Ballet Slipper, pausing for fifteen minutes before coats. Let the painted wood candle holders dry for several hours before continuing your project.
