Review of 1978 John Carpenter's Classic Slasher Halloween

The Legend of Michael Myers Begins

On Halloween night, 1963 in Haddonfield, six-year-old Michael Myers returns from trick-or-treating and for an unknown reason stabs and kills his older sister to death and is found by his parents staring into space with the bloody knife in his hand. Sent to a mental institution, Michael
spends fifteen years just staring into space despite the efforts of his Dr. Loomis. On October 30th 1978, something triggers Michael off and during a storm manages to escape. At the same time Dr. Loomis and Nurse Marion were coming to take Michael to a court to keep him locked up. Michael goes back to Haddonfield where he first dons his signature a white mask. Meanwhile in Haddonfield, Laurie Stode is the target of Michael's stalking. Dr. Loomis arrives with the Sheriff and hunt for Michael but no one but Loomis fully understands the threat Michael poses. Halloween night, the killing begins anew!

Re-watched Halloween for the first time in a few years. It's just as good, if not better than the other times I've seen it. I saw a few things I haven't noticed before. This movie is barebones plot-wise but I think this forces us to focus solely on the atmosphere of each scene. Everything about this film is barebones in style, from Michael's mask to his walk. Carpenter said he wanted Michael to be a force of evil, the boogeyman, an invincible and unstoppable force that kills without reason or remorse. The SFX are minimal but effective. I didn't see much gore or blood, unlike Friday the 13th. I really don't care about that as long as I know people died.

This is one few slasher type movies I ever liked. I guess with Jamie Lee Curtis in it there is an extra something which makes this movie rise above the rest.
