Review of 1978 John Carpenter's Classic Slasher Halloween
The Legend of Michael Myers Begins
On Halloween night, 1963 in Haddonfield, six-year-old Michael Myers returns from trick-or-treating and for an unknown reason stabs and kills his older sister to death and is found by his parents staring into space with the bloody knife in his hand. Sent to a mental institution, MichaelRe-watched Halloween for the first time in a few years. It's just as good, if not better than the other times I've seen it. I saw a few things I haven't noticed before. This movie is barebones plot-wise but I think this forces us to focus solely on the atmosphere of each scene. Everything about this film is barebones in style, from Michael's mask to his walk. Carpenter said he wanted Michael to be a force of evil, the boogeyman, an invincible and unstoppable force that kills without reason or remorse. The SFX are minimal but effective. I didn't see much gore or blood, unlike Friday the 13th. I really don't care about that as long as I know people died.
