We all know the headlines.  Social Security is in danger of becoming bankrupt.  The super rich are getting richer faster than ever before.  The number of people in America living below the poverty line is growing.  Health care costs are out of control.  Energy prices are spiraling upward.  Wage growth is stagnating.  Interest rates are on the rise.  We are in a war that is more about empire building than it is about "bringing democracy."

What are the differences?

Capitalism, at is most basic, is all about greed.  It is about "me"  making more than "you."  It is about control.  The "haves" controlling the "have nots."  It has led to a culture of greed that is centered on consumption of resources over the pursuit of higher ideals.  It is the reason a lawyer can make 10, 50, or 100 times what a teacher or fireman makes.  It has led to a system that values corporations over people, profits over a truly fulfilling life.  Of course, it has its good points.  It encourages new ideas, although they are usually only new ideas for making money.  It allows hard work to be rewarded, at least sometimes.  It short, it is a system that benefits those who don't do the work over those who do.  Shareholders and CEOs get rich, the wage earner goes in debt to afford heating oil.  Companies like Wal-Mart make billions, while the people making their products scratch out a few dollars a day.  People like Dick Cheney and Paris Hilton get richer without lifting a finger.

Takeaways
  • Universal health care should be a right for a persons in a modern society.
  • Capitalism benefits those who don't do the actual work over those who do.
  • The true God of Capitalism is the dollar.
Did You Know?
The gap between the rich and poor in America is greater than it ever has been in the past.

Well, I hesitate to agree with you, but you are on to something. What I struggle with is this. Taking from the rich and giving to the poor sounds great. It's the Robin Hood idea. But how do we know the government will give to the poor once they've taken from the rich? What stops them from pocketing half if not more of that? Also, what keeps them from gagging us when we do speak up about it? Once we bring big government into our lives, problems are not solved. They are complicated. We've seen it happen already in other areas. So, while I'd love an equal economic playing field with the rich elite, I'm not convinced government intervention is going to bring it about.

Whoever wrote this article is just a crybaby leftist. "People ahead of profits" is so dumb. People choose to voluntarily purchase from corporations. I don't get why the heck it is that if the left doesn't like for-profit corporations then they can just not shop there. The right too, can quit complaining about other people's lifestyle choices by not choosing to live in the ways they hate. Why can't everybody just shut up, live their life, and quit messing around with other people's voluntary choices? Really, is there any logical reason that does not involve emotional slogans? I think not.

Let's get back to the intent of the founders, and our actual Constitution. The 16th and 17th and creation of the Federal Reserve screwed everything up, and made the federal government "sovereign" the very thing the founders warned against and were trying to prevent. Bring back the Constitution!

Anyone who thinks socialiasm will work is just a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed hippy who knows nothing about human nature and only speaks of what he reads in his liberal literature. Liberal literature...both words there seem to have quite a bit in common with each other. Yet, we all know those that spend too much time in literature don't spend enough damn time in the real world.

And, Timothy, do rememember that all those innovative products you have cited are full of that High Fructose Corn Syrup which is another competitively devised and produced product for huge profits. At which the profiteering doctors enter the picture over the health risks of such. Honestly, how would we do our women proud if we had no profit from which we shower our beloved ones with all their hearts desire?

This is, Jeff, hold on to something, what you advocate here, "sectarianized religiosity". Religion, years back before everybody learned they actually have a choice-"IF" theu live in North America or some of Europe- was how the wealth got spread out. Jeff, are you saying there was a use for religiosity? Are you implying that now that we have eliminated it in favor of profit that we need back some of what has been disemboweled from it?

You hit on some good points here. Changing our priorities would be a good start but it will take a lot more than that to get it right. It's a very complex issue involving personal freedom, incentives, utility, and desert. Truly, what you seek is called Economic Justice. It is also the title of an excellent book by Stephen Nathanson which was required reading in college. It's short, simple, and very enlightening. Incidentally, I've written a review on it. Check out "Rediscovering Socialism" by me.

Money makes money. If you don't have any to start with, it's damn near impossible to get the traction needd to make any. That's why our perverted form of capitolism doesn't work. They can cite Adam Smith's philosophy all they want and say "invisible hand of supply and demand" yada yada, but Mr. Smith is probably rolling over in his grave right now!

Capitalism allows for competition, which breeds new ideas such as: Kellogg's Raisin Brand, Post Raisin Brand, General Mills Raisin Brand, Walmart Brand Raisin Bran, Albertson's Raisin Brand, Winn-Dixie Brand Raisin Bran...well, you get the idea.
