In struggling with the liquidity crisis, the United States Senate seems to have found that it goes beyond banks, investment firms, and even generally small business. It seems that, among others, the manufacturers of wooden arrows for children were in peril.

Dutifully, the Senate tucked into its version of the bailout bill a provision repealing a 39 cent excise tax on wooden arrows made for children. This relief for the beleaguered wooden arrows industry was included on behalf of Senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith, Democrat and Republican respectively, of Oregon to benefit arrow manufacturers in their state.

One supposes that if one makes fiberglass arrows for adults, one is just out of luck.

The Senate bailout bill also contains provisions benefiting Hollywood producers, stockcar race track owners, and rum distillers. These kinds of provisions are delicately known as earmarks. They are commonly known as pork.

The German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck once said that there are two things that should not be looked at too closely, sausage making and law making. The Senate bailout bill, filled out with pork to get Senators to sign on to it, is sausage making at its finest and at its worst.

The liquidity crisis, we are told, has the potential to sink the American economy and cause a second Great Depression. If no one is willing to loan anyone any money, then commerce will grind to a halt. Tens of millions of people will lose their jobs. Chaos will reign.

And, incidentally, Barack Obama will be elected with a far left Congress with a mandate to enact a second New Deal. That is a nightmarish prospect that should be an incentive for any Republican law makers to want to fix the liquidity crisis before it gets really out of control.

No...without the 'pork', Congress would not have been in gridlock since the 1790s, they would have passed or blocked legislation based on the actual merit of the legislation itself. The way it should be, and what IS best for the nation.

Those who ridicule the added "pork" in the bail out bill know in Congress as the "emergency economic stabilization act" apparently don't understand that without the addition of these items, Congress would have been in gridlock since the first Congress in the 1790's. How could we expect the human beings -- that is worth repeating -- human beings in Congress to make their voting choice solely on "what is better for the nation" when we -- ourselves -- fail to do so? Is a vote for lower taxes or less regulations or more handouts really a vote in the best interests of the nation? Or is it a vote in the best interest of loved ones and friends? I'm glad the act was passed. The Laissez Fare is fine during good economic times, but it is sorely inadequate during a collapse of the backbone of our economy: The banking and investment institutions.

What a joke it is to fill the bill with incentives to get "yes" votes. If the economy was in such dire straits isn't that enough reason to pass it! The media created a portrait of DOOM to scare the American public and the Wall St crooks manipulated Mondays stock market to flex their financial power over the typical joe. One trillion lost---NO one trillion switched hands from the weak that sold to the corrupt Wall St. players on the cheap. Then the public jumped sides once their stocks went down and favored the vote. Idiot sheep. Saving student loans and freeing up loans so people can buy cars. HAHA work your way through college or get a scholorship, thats what I did. Same with my parents. As for car loans, overextend yourself again american public. Credit, swipe and pay it later silly rabbit. You'll never learn. And if the media talks about the small grocery store owner who can't pay his employees cause he can't get a loan I'm going to explode. Put that guy on TV so we can see him. I d

It is ridiculous, especially when there are so many simple things that can be done to just make the bailout itself a better idea. For starters, if the whole purpose of it is to encourage lending, why are there no requirements for any of it to be used that way? I can't get a mortgage to buy a $500,000 house and then turn around and use the money to buy a half-million dollars worth of Jello instead. Simple language requires that the money I'm given is to be used for a specific purpose...why not do the same? No, instead let's add more unrelated crap on and just drive the cost up? Unbelievable! I for one, will NOT be voting for anyone who approves this bill, which so far includes: my Representative, both Senators, both major Presidential candidates, and one Vice Presidential candidate. What a sad, sad state of State.

450 pages of nothing but spending. I wonder if the wooden arrow manufacturers are going to pass the savings on to the consumer of said wooden arrows? And I don't know about any of you, but, who cares is the banks are now insured up to $250,000. Sorry but $100,000 more than covered me.

They could have saved the economy if they had spent this time working on a real bill. They are holding the people hostage to get what they want to keep their friends rich. This bill lets people still loose their houses at the rate of 10,000 a day. You would have to be a real looser to vote yes, I don't care how bad they threaten us. We will replace the ones who voted for this. If we don't, there is no hope for this country and I will be packing my stuff and moving before these idiots sell us completely out. If this bill passes, everything the founding fathers set up is gone, Everything your ancestors died for is over, its time to find a new place to live. one without the Bush family and without Haliburton. I will not give one more day of my life or one more penny to these idiots.

Good article. Of the Oregon senators Ron Wyden voted no and Gordon Smith yes. The thing about the wooden arrows may have been added for their benefit, whatever the reason for this was, it didn't get past Senator Wyden.

Somehow, I don't think this is the correct answer. It appeared "business as usual" and to hell with that the people think. If I hear, "They just don't understand" one more time, I might just have to throw up! Good read here. I am still contactine my congressmen.........

It's absolutely ridiculous. Pork is pork. These Senators should be ashamed of themselves. They're counting on us not remembering who did what, when, or even to care why. Fine. We're going to keep a list at: http://bailoutbrigade.com of everyone who supports this thing.
