Fall Décor Ideas: Black and White Polka Dot Pumpkins

4
Polka dots have recently become a posh staple in home decorating. This Fall, your pumpkin designs can easily include this whimsical design with this fun black and white polka dot project! With drying time, this project only takes a few hours to complete.

For this project, you will need:

- One or more good sized pumpkins

- Several different sized circle objects (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, etc.)

- Pencil

- Adhesive backed craft paper

- Craft knife

- Self healing mat

- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Semi-Gloss White

- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Semi-Gloss Black

- Acrylic paint (optional)

- Artist's paintbrush (optional)

- Newspaper or a large drop cloth (plastic or cloth)

Due to the messy nature of this fun Fall project, covering your work area with an adequate amount of old newspapers or a large drop cloth is highly recommended.

Place the pumpkin flat on the work surface. Apply a thick coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Semi-Gloss White. Wait fifteen minutes before adding a second coat. Repeat this process with third and fourth coats, or until the natural orange shade of the pumpkin no longer shows through. Dry for several hours.

Lay the sheet of adhesive backed craft paper flat on the self healing mat. Place the coins or other circle shapes onto the paper. Trace around the outside of the circles with a pencil. Cut out the circle shapes carefully with a craft knife.

Remove the sheeting from the back of each circle, exposing the adhesive. Adhere each circle in random spots on the painted white pumpkin. Smooth the craft paper with your fingers to assure no paint in the next few steps can get underneath.

Spray the entire pumpkin with five to six coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Semi-Gloss Black, pausing fifteen minutes between coats. Allow the pumpkin to dry for three to four hours.

Remove the circle shapes by carefully peeling them off. This should expose white "polka dots" against the black painted pumpkin! Add additional details, if desired, with a bit of acrylic paint and an artist's paintbrush.

  • If adhesive backed craft paper is not available, consider using laser labels or circle stickers.
  • This project also looks fabulous done in a variety of other colors.
  • Happy Fall!
