Marriages that stand up to the test of time and endure through life's many challenges rely on the basic fundamentals of a good friendship, among other things. While sexual chemistry and romance are always important to keep a marriage satisfying and fulfilling, they are not the only components of a long lasting commitment. Unfortunately, some married couples tend to treat their friends outside of the marriage a good deal better than they treat their spouse. Outside friendships are very important to maintain the autonomy of married people, as well as to provide emotional support and enjoyable companionship. However, the same care and attention that one gives to their friendships should also be given to their spouse. Here are some tips and suggestions on how to enrich your marriage by being a best friend to your spouse.

Don't Belittle Or Insult Your Spouse To Your Friends. While we all need to vent to our friends once in awhile about the irritations that come with married life, always be respectful of your spouse. Calling your husband or wife names or demeaning them to your friends is extremely disrespectful and inappropriate. You wouldn't expect to maintain a friendship with your best friend if you frequently talked about them behind their back in a negative manner, so why shouldn't you show your spouse the same courtesy?

Show An Interest In Your Spouse's Hobbies And Passions. Sports, cars, gardening or scrap booking may bore you to death, but if one of these is your spouse's passion, show a healthy interest. Ask questions, listen, and try to find out what makes the hobby or interest so fulfilling to your husband or wife. If your best friend spent much of their free time on certain hobby, you would certainly try to find out more on the subject in an effort to get to know them better. Give your relationship with your spouse the same effort and take a healthy interest in what is appealing to them.

Great advice. All of the information is useful, but I think to me, the standout was accepting your spouse and not making such a big deal out of the minor annoyances.

I must be onto a winner because I consider my husband my best friend. When I speak about my husband to others, I always have something good to say about him. That's the way it should be. Talking behind your husband's back and disrespecting him to others will not help a marriage. I know I could take more of an interest in sports, but I do well in most other areas. Sophie
