10 Common Signs of Teen Depression

Teen depression is a serious problem that may go unnoticed for a long time. Experts estimate that only 10 percent of the teens suffering from depression receive any kind of help. The problem lies in the
fact that some of the symptoms of teen depression can be different from the symptoms of depression in adults. For example adults usually withdraw when they are depressed whereas teens may become more aggressive and violent as a result of depression.

Although teen depression may be just a passing phase in many cases some cases of teen depression may lead to serious consequences like self inflicted injury or even suicide. Therefore even if the on the surface the depression in a teen may not seem to be a serious problem it is safer to take it seriously and seek professional help as the condition is easily treatable. I have personally been through some anxious times when my teenage daughter was suffering from depression. Fortunately I educated myself about the condition and sought professional help in time. Parents should educate themselves about the various signs of teen depression so that they will be able to recognize it and take corrective action in time. The following are 10 signs of teen depression.

1. Some teens who are feeling depressed will show signs of sadness. They may show this by dressing up gloomily in black clothes or write poems based on morbid subjects. They may start preferring depressing music and even cry without any reason. This is one of the very obvious depression symptoms and parents should not have any difficulty in recognizing the underlying state of depression.

2. Feelings of hopelessness can cause depression in teens. At some point a teen may think that life is not worth living and this will reflect in their indifference to their personal appearance and hygiene. They get the idea that a particular negative situation is here to stay and they develop a pessimistic view of life.
