The widespread belief that the flu shot can cause the flu reminds me of the old story among teenagers that Mountain Dew can prevent pregnancy. Because these myths are repeated so often, people start believing they are true.

The truth is the only way you can get the flu right after getting the flu shot is if you contract the virus at about the same time you get the flu shot. The coincidence in timing will convince you that the flu shot caused the flu, and you will subsequently tell all your friends and neighbors about it, providing more grist for the rumor mill.

Yet, just because two things happen at about the same time, the first thing to occur does not necessarily cause the latter. That would be akin to proclaiming that stock prices plunged today because the Patriots beat the 49ers yesterday.

Logic dictates that if one could actually get the flu from the flu shot, a much higher percentage of those people getting the flu shot would come down with the flu right away, causing a public relations nightmare far worse than the Tylenol cyanide scandal.

The main reason you cannot get the flu from the flu shot is that the viruses in the shot are inactivated. That means the viruses are dead and cannot spread as a live virus could, just as a dead plant cannot sprout roots. (In contrast, the flu mist or nasal spray vaccine contains a weakened live virus. It will not cause a healthy person to come down with the flu but is not recommended for pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems and other vulnerable populations.)

Even though the flu shot will not cause the flu, you may still experience some short-lived unpleasant side effects, such as low grade fever; body aches; and soreness, swelling or redness at the injection site. A fractional percentage of people will have a more severe allergic reaction to the flu shot called Guillain-Barré syndrome, a condition in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. This allergic reaction is actually worse than the flu itself, but it is not the flu.

The myth that the flu shot causes the flu is reminiscent of the old saw that Mountain Dew prevents pregnancy, neither of which urban legend is true.

Takeaways
  • You cannot get the flu from the flu shot.
  • The flu shot contains inactivated, or dead, strains of the flu virus.
  • Some possible side effects of the flu shot are body aches and low grade fever.
Did You Know?
This year school aged children are being urged to get the flu shot since health care experts realized that, even though their immune systems are generally strong enough to survive the illness, they are Typhoid Marys to more vulnerable populations.

Good info! I had heard from health care providers that some people experience "flulike symptoms", so I guess that's what's up. My hubby gets one every year and still gets several colds. Maybe he should try the Mt Dew instead :-)

I have never had a flu shot, but I have heard lots of people talk about how you can get the flu from the shot -- thanks for clearing that up!

Well, I guess I'm one of those guys who got a flu shot and came dowm with the flu the very next day. Although Your expAlNATION SOUNDS very VERY LOGICAL I have never had the flu shot after that one experience and have not come dowm with it. It's been years since i've had the flu. I guess you might say, I was lucky. The only time I get the flu is when i go without sleep for some time.....I guess my resistance is lowered at this time------okay, stop bragging Harriet.

Interesting. I suppose if you get fever chills and upset stomach as a reaction to the shot you would consider it a mild form of the flu and that may just be where the idea came from.

I remember way back when the Hong Kong flu was the big deadly thing. I actually did get the flu from the flu shot that the hospital made me take. I was down and out for two solid weeks.

Years ago, I remember standing in line with my parents to get vaccinated for whatever. From teen2adult, I've never gotten flu shots because I don't believe in them...they can do more harm than good. My friends received the shots and were sick as dogs afterward. My concept is a clean and healthy life-style. Try keeping stress to a minimum, think positive and recognize your bod's "flag" - to stop or rest. I may be the OLDEST car in the lot, but my engine is r e v v e d up everyday:))

Donna... you've just elevated my self-esteem. Just when I feel totally worthless, I realize I am at least immuno-competent!!

Quite funny Nancy --I'm not able to take the flu shot but there is a lot of misunderstanding surrounding it for immuno-competent persons. Maybe people can think of your article and smile (and be distracted) when the big, bad needle approaches.

JR... write an article on where to get flu shots in Boston and you'll find a place and pay for the shot at the same time : )
