Washington State University is hosting open try-outs for the position of quarterback on their college football team today. Due to injuries, spots have opened up on the team, and the coach is looking to fill the role of quarterback with someone out of the student population. It's a move that normally isn't seen from a Division I school, but one which has really become needed after recent injuries tearing apart the Washington State Cougars starters this season. The need to find someone to come on as a quarterback stems from severe injuries that have occurred in the Cougars previous games this season. Not to mention all of the minor injuries to players, both starting quarterbacks (and original backup) have gone down with season ending injuries to them. Gary Rogers and Kevin Lopina had both been hoping to have good seasons as the starting quarterback of a Pacific-10 conference team, but it just was not to be when they both went down with freak injuries. This has stretched the depth-chart to the breaking point, and with a red-shirt freshman (Marshall Lobbestael) in the last two games, and not succeeding by any stretch of the imagination, Coach Paul Wulff decided to try something new.
Coach Wulff opened up today's practice to anyone of the 25,000 current students who thinks they have what it takes to be the new quarterback for the Washington State Cougars. Wulff was quoted as saying that he has had as many as 50 students already inquire about the position since the announcement was made, and he also noted "There's a lot of guys out there who want to do it. Some kids who have a background and who are very interesting to us." The Cougars will be opening the 3pm practice on October 6th to all students who want to fill out their paperwork and get a try-out, and who knows, maybe the next great college star will be found amongst this bunch of late-season recruits.
