Ski Areas
The state of Connecticut does not have huge mountains but it does have some decent small ones that provide skiing and snowboarding activities. Because the Hartford area slopes are not to intimidating they are perfect for children and beginners. In fact the Hartford area ski locations are very experienced at teaching beginners. This Hartford area winter activity is perfect for a family day out. There are a number of locations that offer skiing in the Hartford area. These are Mount Southington, which has fourteen trails and a terrain park, Ski Sundown, which has fifteen trails and two snow parks, Mohawk Mountain, which has twenty four trails and Powder Ridge. However please note that Powder ridge is in the middle of owner transfer and has yet to set a date for opening in the 2006/7 season.

Sledding
This is always one of the most popular winter activities in the Hartford area especially with families. Many of the towns surrounding Hartford have one or more suitable sledding hills that are busy once there has been any snow fall. To find you're local sledding location it is best to speak to some of the parents of your child's friends or call your town hall. There is one snow centre that provides sledding as one of its activities. This is Woodbury. They offer sledding as well as snow tubing, cross country skiing and a terrain park for snow boarders.

Cross Country Skiing
This winter activity in the Hartford area is one of the regions most popular and for good reason. The rolling hills and forest make for ideal cross country skiing conditions. There are at least fifty cross country ski areas within reach of Hartford. Some of the closest are the American Legion State Forest, Burr Pond State Park, Cockaponset State Forest, which is the second largest state forest in Connecticut, Dennis Hill State Park, Gay City State Park, Haddam Meadows State Park, Mohawk State Park and Stratton Brook State Park.
