Halloween theme by John Carpenter

The theme song reflects the spookiness of the movie and Halloween in general. It's got an amazing and lurid beat. It's got tones that sends chills down your spine. It is a great and spooky song. No song is better to ring in the Halloween fears if you ask me. And John Carpenter would continue scoring a lot of his own movies, but would never reach the greatness of Halloween.

Monster Mash by Bobbie Boris Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers

It's fun. It's Monster Mash. A hit song from 1962, Monster Mash began as an imitation of screen legend, Boris Karloff. You can listen to every other Halloween-related song, but the truth is none of them will ever be quite as fun as Monster Mash.

Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr.

The funnest theme song to the funnest ghost story ever put on film. What more can you say? Not only does the song help you love and appreciate the myth of the Ghostbusters, but also ghosts in general.

Twilight Zone theme by Neil Norman & His Cosmic Orchestra

The creepiest TV series of the late '50s and early '60s took America by storm. What would the series be without the nerve-racking and haunting theme song. Whenever you hear it, you always associate the song with the show. It's a brilliant piece of music.

The X-Files theme by Mark Snow

The second greatest theme song to what is perhaps the greatest supernatural TV series ever made. Another song that can remind everyone of the TV show, The X-Files theme is a masterpiece from a relatively unknown Mark Snow. It's still very creepy. While listening to the song, I instantly recall the spookiest and scariest moments from The X-Files TV show.

Psycho theme by Bernard Herrmann

Imitated a lot over the years, the Psycho theme song is chilling and exciting to hear. But you really need to see the Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece to best appreciate the theme. If and when you watch that film - what could be the greatest scary movie ever made, you won't be able to forget the story of Norman Bates and his little motel out in the middle of nowhere whenever you play this masterpiece by Bernard Herrmann.

The Adams Family (main title) by Vic Mizzy

Luke- As you insightfully point out in the summary comments, we are limited in what we like or favor by what we have experienced. C'est la vie - pretty much with everything. David

I'm so glad you noted Thriller among your picks. I know Michael Jackson is controversial as a person but when I hear Thriller, I can't forget how strongly that music grabbed the public's attention, resonated with people. Plus, it went so beyond what was being done in music videos then: longer than usual, with special effects and even the voice of Vincent Price to add an extra flourish. It was so scary that my kids couldn't watch it til they'd gotten older. I still think it stands the test of time. Super article here!
