Crowning Yourself King

A Sermon Based On First Kings Chapter 1

Today's sermon reading is 1 Kings Chapter One. It's 53 verses long, which makes it rather long for a sermon reading.

Because of that, I thought I might cut it in half, and do it in two parts, over two Sundays, but to do it that way leaves us hanging in the middle of the story.

And that missed the whole point of the message. That's just not how God does things. He doesn't leave us right in the middle.

He doesn't shut down the story mid way though. Sorry, it's all over now, nothing to see, God has left the building.

God stays in the building, or the field, or the street. His will be done. We're a part of his will, but we are not the director. We don't call the shots.

HIS will be done.

We may think God has turned his eyes the other way and we can pull a fast one on him. Do the old "slight of hand".

We may think we can circumvent the will of God so everything turns out our way instead of His way.

But it just doesn't work that way. The bible tells us that over and over.

It's not my "my way or the highway"

It's "God's way is the only way"

You see, THY WILL BE DONE, is not a statement of HOPE. "I sure hope God's will be done today", it's a statement of fact. "It will happen - God's will DOES happen and IS happening."

So let's start the story.

The book of second Samuel could have been called the book of David, as nearly the whole book is about him and God's work with and through him. 1 Kings, continues where 2 Samuel leaves off, with David on this deathbed, and Solomon, his son, about to take the throne just as God had said he would.

We all know that that is how it is in the world.....the people all respect God's plans and everything goes smoothly. Not quite.

Starting with verse 1 [of the NLT - New Living Translation]
